Summary

A rousing call to arms whose influence is still felt today

Originally published on the eve of the 1848 European revolutions, The Communist Manifesto is a condensed and incisive account of the worldview Marx and Engels developed during their hectic intellectual and political collaboration。 Formulating the principles of dialectical materialism, they believed that labor creates wealth, hence capitalism is exploitive and antithetical to freedom。

This new edition includes an extensive introduction by Gareth Stedman Jones, Britain's leading expert on Marx and Marxism, providing a complete course for students of The Communist Manifesto, and demonstrating not only the historical importance of the text, but also its place in the world today。

For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world。 With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines。 Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators。

Should the whole regime be changed I would like more elaboration on the value of 1。 Accountability and 2。 Resource allocation (as I believe these are the two largest flaws of communist societies that we saw) Still 140 years later class struggle remains and the economic divide grows larger。 As more of the proletariat is automated out of work, what Revolution comes next? 。。。more

Tbh I couldn't understand half of this so I'm not going to rate it。 It definitely didn't sound like it was written by the 'proletariat'。I agree with a lot of what it says about worker exploitation, colonialism and issues within capitalism。 I just didn't feel like I could understand most of it。 I'd probably have to reread with a thesaurus to hand and make lots of notes to fully grasp the content。 Tbh I couldn't understand half of this so I'm not going to rate it。 It definitely didn't sound like it was written by the 'proletariat'。I agree with a lot of what it says about worker exploitation, colonialism and issues within capitalism。 I just didn't feel like I could understand most of it。 I'd probably have to reread with a thesaurus to hand and make lots of notes to fully grasp the content。 。。。more

A short manifesto that lays the (healthy) foundations of what communism wants to be。 Read with hindsight it can be understood quite easily how and why it has failed in all its attempts to put it into practice: because of the human condition and because it exists in a capitalist context, which leads communism to become dictatorial (beware: as a movement per se, communism is not dictatorial, but the opposite)。It is a book that in my opinion we should all read at different stages of our lives to un A short manifesto that lays the (healthy) foundations of what communism wants to be。 Read with hindsight it can be understood quite easily how and why it has failed in all its attempts to put it into practice: because of the human condition and because it exists in a capitalist context, which leads communism to become dictatorial (beware: as a movement per se, communism is not dictatorial, but the opposite)。It is a book that in my opinion we should all read at different stages of our lives to understand it with different nuances and contrast them to understand, not only the historical context in which it was written but the current one。 。。。more

my first time reading anything about marxist theory/communism went well。 a good introduction to the ideas & pretty informative overall。 I will definitely be looking up more of Marx's work (among others) in the future。it's intersting to see how Marx's pamphlet relates to society today and society during the time of its release。 ill probably reread it a couple times along with other things in the future to really better understand it, as well。 my first time reading anything about marxist theory/communism went well。 a good introduction to the ideas & pretty informative overall。 I will definitely be looking up more of Marx's work (among others) in the future。it's intersting to see how Marx's pamphlet relates to society today and society during the time of its release。 ill probably reread it a couple times along with other things in the future to really better understand it, as well。 。。。more

It's always strange rating and reviewing a book like this that has been read, debated, and dissected by thousands and thousands of people。 And its perhaps more than a little sublime to think of how many millions of people have been affected by this book's influence or at least people's conceptions of it。 So instead of trying to review the quality of Marx's analysis, I will share my views of it。 I am glad I happened to acquire this Pocket Book edition because it featured an introduction by Franci It's always strange rating and reviewing a book like this that has been read, debated, and dissected by thousands and thousands of people。 And its perhaps more than a little sublime to think of how many millions of people have been affected by this book's influence or at least people's conceptions of it。 So instead of trying to review the quality of Marx's analysis, I will share my views of it。 I am glad I happened to acquire this Pocket Book edition because it featured an introduction by Francis B。 Randall which I found especially helpful in understanding Marx and his manifesto。 Randall's introduction presented Marx not as an economist, philosopher, or historian, but as a 19th-century Romantic writer。 He is compared to people like Wagner and Hegal and other Romantics of the mid 19th century, who saw history and society in terms of epic struggles and grand narratives。 The works of the Romantics are very spiritual, but typically reject any sort of organized religion and even sometimes the very idea of God (Marx was an atheist)。 When I read the actual work, I realized that there is really nothing scientific about it。 Not only is the Manifesto wrong in its predictions of the future and (in my opinion) of its analysis of the past, but its honestly bordering on pure fantasy。 I have heard Marxism described as a religion, and I can see the validity of that description。 Marx's description of the rise of the Proletariat and the demise of the Bourgeoisie often reads like an epic tale from mythology more than a modern rational work。 Of course, most of the millions of people who were "Communists" in the 20th century probably never read this book and if they did, they may not have recognized much similarity between their experience and what Marx described as Communism。 Could we not compare this disjunction to that between religious writings and the lived experience of the practitioners of those religions? The manifesto is best understood as work of cultish prophesy from a bygone era that falsely predicted the future and failed in its fantastical (though often well-intentioned) goal of promoting the ideal classless state of communism, but succeeded in promoting revolutions that, though often well-intentioned, would cause the needless deaths of millions。 。。。more
